The American Kennel Club recently held the most successful AKC Meet the Breeds to date. Taking place in the Jacob K. Javits Center in New York City on January 25th and 26th, this educational pet extravaganza provided the public with the opportunity to meet
and engage with breeders and their dogs (and some cats) in person. Thousands of visitors attended over the course of the two days, each of whom were excited and enthusiastic to learn about purebred dogs, their purpose and responsible pet ownership. Exciting demonstrations in Obedience, Agility, Dog Detec- tion and Scent Work were featured in a revamped demonstration ring, and several vendors as well as an art contest and a patch program for children were part of the 11th annual event.
There were new elements this year that helped create an enjoyable expe- rience for all. Updated booth signage and breed-specific trading cards pro- vided valuable information to the public, and the newly created AKC Meet the Breeds app gave users breed booth information, a map of the event and demo ring schedule at their fingertips. The Puppy Pack Park was a huge hit and gave attendees the chance to meet and play with the current members of the AKC Puppy Pack.
AKC Meet the Breeds continues to be a valuable opportunity to educate dog lovers and engage with the public and elected officials. This is all made possible through the commitment and volunteerism of AKC’s highly dedi- cated and knowledgeable parent clubs.
