It was a sunny, hot summer day in Orlando, Florida. But, as typical for this time of year, the weather would suddenly change mid- afternoon. The sky would turn dark, gusts
of wind would blow patio furniture around the yard and heavy rain would pour out of the clouds. A day that was just minutes ago sizzling hot would end up wind would change in an instant to an afternoon of sharp lightning strikes and loud claps of thunder.
Lucy, an 80 pound Golden Retriever, instinc- tively knew a storm was rolling in before the fam- ily became aware. Terrified, she would hide in kitchen pantry and curl up in a ball full of shiv- ers. No matter how much would be done to calm her fear, she stayed hidden in the pantry until the storm passed through.
It wasn’t just thunderstorms that caused anxi- ety for Lucy. Sometimes it was an object out of place or a new, unfamiliar item in the house. She’d walk the long way around it keeping a close eye so she could be ready to run, if necessary. And if there was an unexpected squeak or noise, she’d scurry away in fear.
